About:

Once there was a guy that spent most of his out-of-class time at Ole Miss scouting out, jumping in, and rummaging through dumpsters and street side garbage piles. The highlight of his week was the “night before trash day.” After graduation, he wanted to move back to the Coast.

One sobering morning he surveyed all he had collected over the years. It was Everywhere, it was Insane: warped used two by fours, old tin roofing, bent nails, ugly windows, mountains of pure, unadulterated junk! Continue reading The Shed Story…

Review:

On our way to Gulf Coast Gator Ranch I caught a glimpse of an advertisement or The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint ™ ; A Family Food Drinkery . Being a fan of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and great barbecue I new we had to eat there. I asked my wife to see how far The Shed was from the gator ranch, it was only 16 minutes. Dinner plans changed we’re going to The Shed.

Pulling down the road into the parking lot makes you feel like you are being transported to the Deep South in a time when people were making moonshine in their backyard sheds. We walked up to what can only be described as a mixture of “junktique” decorations and shacks cobbled together half haphazardly but it’s all part of the charm.

The hostess at the entrance was very friendly and extremely helpful. She asked my wife and I if we had been to The Shed before. We hadn’t so she provided us with a menu and explained the ordering process. She also recommended the ShedHed Sampler where we would get to sample all seven meats.

You order at the counter. (They have a vast selection of beers from American to Belgium to a slew of craft and IPA selections, as well as ciders.) Then you go wait in a large covered area with picnic tables and the servers bring out your food, shouting your name.

Both styles of ribs were falling off the bone (just a little overcooked, they should have staid on the bone and have a little chew) and had the perfect amount of smoke, the chicken was delicious, the pulled pork was amazing, the brisket was super tender, however it was chopped instead of sliced (it’s a regional thing) and the Serious sausage was seriously good.

My only complaint is they pre-sauced all the meats. I would have preferred not to have the meat sauced, as I want to decide what meat I want to sauce and what sauce I want on it. At least they are not trying to hide poor quality barbecue by covering it up with sauce.

The Shed has three distinctly different barbecues sauces, “Spice It Up Mustard”, “Sweet and Tangy” (Mississippi Gold), and “Southern Sweet” (Original ShedSpred), my favorite was the “Sweet and Tangy” sauce.

The sides were just sides, nothing special. G’maw’s Famous Beans were just okay but had good flavor despite the fact that there was no evidence of bell peppers, onions or bacon, the Good Ole’ Mac and Cheese was also just okay and a little dry, and the sweet potato fries were good.

We boxed up the leftover meats and took them back to the RV for lunch the following day.

I originally ordered the Southern Prohibition Brewing Mississippi Fire Ant Imperial Red Ale, unfortunately they were out and the ShedHed behind the counter the Lazy Magnolia’s Southern Pecan and said it want typical nut brown ale. He provided me with a sample and I was sold.

The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint

Lazy Magnolia’s Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale is believed to be the first beer made with whole roasted pecans.   The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This is definitely not your typical nut brown ale. It pours beautiful clear amber with a deep ruby tint. It has the typical nose of a brown ale but is slightly sweet with a hint of caramel and has a nutty aspect but its not yelling pecans.

I’ve had the opportunity to try some amazing barbecue all over this great nation including Franklin Barbecue in Austin TX, Scott’s Barbecue in Hemingway SC, Joe’s Kansas City BBQ in Kansas City KS, Bogart’s Smokehouse in St. Louis MO and Rendezvous in Memphis TN, just to name a few and The Shed BBQ & Blues Joint is some of the best barbecue I have ever eaten.
