This is it, the beginning….. the house just sold and closes in 42 days.

We will be starting our extended recreational vehicle adventure in our brand new Open Range Roamer 371MBH Fifth Wheel. So I headed up to Freedom RV in Fresno, California from Temecula, California with my brother Erik, and my buddies Jerald, Mark and his son Colton to pick it up and do the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI).

We arrived at Freedom RV at 9:00am (we left SoCal at 3:30am) to begin the PDI and for the most part everything was good. There were a few items that needed to be addressed but mostly cosmetic and I will schedule them at a later date when it works in our schedule and all parts will be at the dealer. We grabbed a quick lunch and we headed out about 1:45 pm, a little later than I had hoped, with a three and a half hour drive I was pushing sunset and I didn’t was to have to set-up for the first time in the dark.

The 5ver is very long at 42” and the longest trailer and first fifth wheel I have ever towed so I was a little nervous.  We got it all hooked up and headed south on CA 99 towards Kernville.  CA 99 is an absolutely horrible highway and is in desperate need of resurfacing. I don’t want to get too political but if the Satan government would stop steeling the gas tax, the highest in the nation, and actually spend it on the roads in California, California would have the best roads in the nation, especially with the 24 cent a gallon increase to the diesel fuel tax that was addd November first 2017.

Ask my wife, I research thing to death, and this trip was not exception I even Googles Earthed the drive from CA 99 on CA 178 to Lake Isabella via street view and it looked fine, but that was 33 white knuckle miles of two lane mountain roads with rock outcrops that I feared would take out the 5ver.

We finally made it to Frandy Park Campground in Kernville, California siting right on the Kern River. Since this we the first time docking the 5ver I selected a pull through site when making the reservations. With the help of my “crew” we got everything set-up right at dusk. (picture below is the next morning)

Not wanting to cook dinner for the crew that evening after a long madden voyage we opted to go to the Kern River Brewing Company’s  “Original Brew Pub” for dinner and some craft beverages.

Restaurant Review Kern River Brewing Company

After a restful night, we got up, brewed coffee and made bacon, egg and cheese sandwich’s with bacon-jalapeño jam from the Kern River Brewing Company. All fulled up we decided to do a walking tour of Kernville. For dinner I tested out the outdoor kitchen and grill. Going from a large kitchen to an RV kitchen was going to be a learning experience.

We had grilled New York Strip Steaks, steamed green beans and loaded baked potatoes, which were enjoyed by all. We then headed to Kern River Brewing Company’s “The Backyard” for a pint or two before heading back t the 5ver for the night.

We headed out the next morning, taking a different route, CA 178 to US 395 a much less stressful route. It was a great first trip with the new RV, looking forward to the new adventures traveling and seeing this great country of our.

Cheers,

Chris
