Beer Braised Bratwurst and Onions

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 4 bratwurst sausages
  • 1 (12-ounce) bottle amber ale or brown ale
  • Stone ground mustard

 

Beer Braised Bratwurst and Onions

Preparation:

In a skillet heat olive oil over medium high heat. Add the onion and sausage and cook covered for 5 minutes or until the onions begin to soften.

Season with sea salt and add 1/2 the bottle of ale (drink the other half) and bring to a low boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, turning the brats occasionally.

Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Cook the bratwurst sausages on the grill for 2-4 minutes per side or until browned on all sides.

Meanwhile turn the skillet with the onions to medium-high and cook uncovered until the beer has reduced and onions are caramelized.

Serve Brats with the caramelized onions with a side of German-Style Green Beans with Bacon and Onions.

Alternately, Toast the brat buns, spread the stone ground mustard on the buns. Add the sausages and top with the caramelized onions and serve.
