The world’s first heavier-than-air aircraft flight took place on Dec. 17, 1903, on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, where the Wright Brothers first tested the gliders that would later be powered with engines and fly successfully at Kitty Hawk, N.C. The site of those first test flights on Kill Devil Hill is marked with a 60-foot pylon and markers indicating the takeoffs and landings achieved that day. The 431-acre park also includes statues and a glider poised at the moment of takeoff, a visitor center with a working model of the Wright Brothers’ 1902 Flyer glider, and a pavilion with exhibits on the history of flight. A reproduction hanger and living quarters also set the scene for that historic day, and the occasional landings of small planes at the First Flight Airstrip are a vivid reminder of what the two bicycle-makers from Dayton, Ohio set into motion.
